GrandCentral.com -- the Google-acquired service that offers "one number for life" and a host of call forwarding /screening/management tools -- is tiptoeing out of private Beta and effectively giving out numbers to anyone who wants one. (Well, anyone in 46 of the 48 continental United States, anyway.)
I've been critical of a couple GrandCentral hiccups (see here and here), but hey -- that's why there's "Beta" plastered on logo. It's an intriguing service, and while I haven't started using my GC number as my primary contact, I am using it more and more these days.
In other words, it's worth trying. And while there may be fees for some features in the future, right now the price is definitely right. And frankly, I'd rather pay than see Google take the Goog-411 approach. (Which, to my, knowledge, is not being done with GC.) Using directory assistance calls to perfect Google speech-recognition software is one thing, but having my personal calls parsed that way would just be creepy...
